Highway 26, Sandy, Oregon
There may be no better place in the northwest to worship at the altar of the holy American dietary trinity: white flour, white sugar, and saturated fat. Maybe I'm being unfair. These sweet lumps of fried dough may be cooked in pure vegetable oil, or it could be only partially hydrogenated. But who cares? It's all delicious and not very good for you, in which case it's a blessing that Joe's is in Sandy and not just around the corner (except for you Sandonians). Joe's doughnuts are mostly consumed in the car on the way to Mount Hood, which assumes you're headed for some kind of at least mildly strenous activity. If you plan on mountain biking, hiking, or cross country skiing, feel free to eat one of the imcredible buttermilk fritters. A good half-pound of nearly empty calories, they're almost always available in apple or blueberry, less often appearing flavored with raspberry or orange. Downhillers should use some restraint. That shussing does burn calories, but it's just not the aerobic workout you'll get forgoing the acceleration of gravity on a pair of thin slats. Maybe half a maple bar on the way up, then finish it off at the end of the day. There's a lot of turnover, so the coffee's usually fresh, if not very strong. The newly aquired espresso machine makes this a one-stop breakfast stop.
