Za’atar describes both an herb and the spice blend that contains it. Native to the Middle East and a member of the mint family, Origanum syriacum is also called hyssop or Lebanese oregano. Za’atar the mix also contains sesame seeds and puckery sumac, but New York Shuk adds olive oil-roasted chickpeas and salt for a more complex flavor. Traditionally sprinkled on flatbread, it’s also great on meat, chicken, or seafood as well as vegetables and beans.
